Imagination will take you everywhere.” We are not aware of things and events, which are waiting for us in future, but we can be aware of expectations of other people concerning us. By the way, the theory was called «Pygmalion effect» after one of the Greek sculptors, whose statue of woman inspired the gods to enliven her. The essence of the revelation is that our friends’ or parents’ ambitions concerning us make a great impact on our activity and personal beliefs, touching our own potential. In other words, if any authoritative for you person ensures that you can climb the Everest, it is much likely and possible that you will do it, even if you have been underestimating your real abilities.

The Experiment of Rosenthal

Firstly, the experiment was taken by psychologist working at Harvard, Robert Rosenthal, who actually gave the name to it lately. The researcher was aimed to define the IQ level of students who were in an elementary school. So, having the test completed, students with best results, so-called “bloomers,” were selected and teachers were assured by Rosenthal: “The chosen students obtain special abilities. Even if they have not proved it, they will soon present themselves.” Shortly after that IQ test, those students who were picked, showed a great academic growth. One of the youngest students made the most noticeable change, having his IQ level elevated up to 27 points. As predicted, the induced deception of teachers, who began to think and expect much more from their students than before, pushed small groups of students to succeed exceedingly in their usual conditions. So, it means that experiment worked and the results confirmed the fact that the expectations of other people have a big value and cause a big difference. Since a person is under the influence of someone’s expectations, he may surpass himself in order to match the expectant. In its turn, this fact shows that we are what we believe to be. The Pygmalion effect was a quantum leap in the history of psychology. The evidence that our treatment of certain people influences their way of behaving is incredible and very useful in everyday routine and on a more global scale. Though, there is a whole bunch of advantages, there is a spot even on the sun. That trick has a flipside and works the opposite way, too. Low level of expectations is also confirmed. It usually touches people who were behaving badly for a more or less long period of time, and as a rule their surrounding expects them to behave in the same manner hereafter. The right way to act is to establish positive expectation as it will certainly leave its mark and make a good result.

Why Doesn’t It Work?

A one more important tip to remember about the Pygmalion is that there is also a case, when it does not work. Remember: if you have high hopes about your friends or colleagues, it is only a half of your success, another half is presented with their unawareness of “being under the spell of Pygmalion.” When your colleague figures out that your expectations about him or her are false, the effect will not appear. The hidden power is the insight belief that you are able to do this, since you feel deceived in some way, you will not feel cheerful or uplifted (which is so essential). Gather nice people around you, who will set higher and higher expectations for you each time and will make you develop, progress and flourish. Self-confidence and high estimation can also make some corrections and influence your routine and lifestyle into more effective one. Be ready to great changes, require a lot!
